Metro’s LAX Transit Center to Open June 6, Connecting Inglewood to Airport
After significant delays, the long-awaited LAX/Metro Transit Center Station will finally open for passengers on June 6, Metro Board Chair Janice Hahn announced this week. The station’s completion marks a major milestone in connecting Inglewood and surrounding communities to the Los Angeles International Airport.
“The wait is nearly over, Los Angeles,” said Hahn in a statement. “At long last, we are getting a train to LAX. And when the LAX People Mover finally opens, we will truly have an international airport that connects people from inside the terminals to the world beyond through Metro.”
Located on a 9.5-acre site at 96th Street and Aviation Boulevard, the station will serve as a crucial transportation hub for Inglewood residents traveling to and from LAX. The complex sits adjacent to the K Line’s vehicle maintenance facility and the easternmost LAX Intermodal Transportation Facility, providing service for Metro’s K and C Lines as well as buses.
For Inglewood residents, the station offers significant improvements to airport access. Currently, community members must rely on rideshare services, taxis, or navigate complex bus connections to reach LAX. The new transit center provides a more affordable and efficient transportation option, potentially reducing traffic congestion along Century Boulevard, a major thoroughfare connecting Inglewood to the airport.
Designed by Grimshaw Architects, the comprehensive transit complex includes a 16-bay bus plaza with charging infrastructure, a multi-level active transportation and bike hub, a vehicle drop-off zone, a customer service center, public restrooms, commercial space, and a sculpture by Los Angeles artist Glenn Kaino in the station’s hub structure.
The station will eventually connect to LAX’s new automated people mover system, which will transport passengers directly to the airport’s central terminal area. However, that 2.25-mile elevated train has faced numerous delays and is now scheduled for completion in late 2026. In the future, the station could also serve as an endpoint for other regional transportation lines, including the planned rail line along the Sepulveda corridor and a proposed bus rapid transit line along Lincoln Boulevard.
The opening of the LAX station completes the initial phase of the K Line. Since the K Line’s debut in 2022, passengers have been unable to travel between Aviation/Century and Westchester/Veterans Stations due to ongoing construction of the transit hub. The completion of this section will facilitate smoother travel for Inglewood residents heading toward El Segundo and the South Bay.
The new station represents a significant improvement to public transportation infrastructure serving Inglewood and neighboring communities, providing more efficient connections to both the airport and the broader Los Angeles County transit network.
