Study Links E. Coli Toxin to Rising Colorectal Cancer in Young Adults
Recent scientific research from the University of California, San Diego has uncovered a potential link between a toxin produced by certain E. coli bacteria and the rising rates of early onset colorectal cancer, with implications for residents of South Los Angeles.
The study, published in Nature, found that colibactin, a toxin produced by some E. coli strains, may be a significant factor in triggering colorectal cancer in younger adults. Colorectal cancer rates among people under 50 have increased by 2.4% annually between 2012 and 2021, a trend that particularly impacts diverse communities like those in Inglewood and Compton.
Local health experts at the Inglewood Community Health Clinic recommend that residents take proactive steps to reduce their risk. This includes maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active, and scheduling regular screenings, especially for those with a family history of colorectal cancer.
