A quiet Monday afternoon in Compton was disrupted on June 9 when residents witnessed what they described as an immigration enforcement team using a military-style armored vehicle to conduct a raid on a local home, resulting in the detention of a family including children.

Video footage reviewed by the Los Angeles Times shows a person in military fatigues standing in the vehicle’s open hatch, holding what appears to be a weapon configured to shoot less-lethal munitions. Witnesses reported that the vehicle took down the home’s front gate before officers detained five to seven people, including at least two children.

The incident occurred at a one-story house near the Compton-Woodley Airport, where Easter decorations still adorned the front yard alongside a damaged driveway gate that neighbors say was bent during the raid. The windshield and driver’s side window of a white van in the driveway were also smashed during the operation.

“They took our neighbors,” said Jesse Ramirez, 25, a next-door neighbor who learned about the incident from family members who witnessed it. “They came and tore down the fence with one of their armored vehicles.”

Ramirez reported that five people of Mexican descent—two parents, a third adult, and two teenagers—were detained and have not returned to the home. The raid has left the neighborhood community deeply shaken and concerned about the escalation of immigration enforcement tactics.

Frank Cervantes, 35, who lives across the street, watched the incident unfold through his Ring camera footage. “It was like a war vehicle—SWAT-style,” Cervantes said. “That’s horrible, man. It’s almost authoritarian.”

The use of military-style equipment in residential areas has raised significant concerns among Compton residents about the militarization of immigration enforcement. The incident highlights the growing fear and stress in immigrant communities across South Los Angeles as federal immigration raids continue to intensify.

“It’s a bit scary, considering I have family who are immigrants,” Ramirez said. “The lengths they’ll go to—they took kids. That’s traumatic for them to go through.”

As of Sunday evening, it remained unclear which specific agency conducted the raid. The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, which polices Compton, stated they were “unaware of an incident.” U.S. Northern Command confirmed the person in the video was not a service member and referred inquiries to the Department of Homeland Security, which did not respond to requests for comment.

The incident in Compton reflects the broader impact of intensified immigration enforcement across Los Angeles County, where raids have sent many residents underground and raised concerns about racial profiling and the use of excessive force in immigrant communities.
