The City of Inglewood held a public hearing on Tuesday, October 28, to approve a $60 million bond issue that will fund the complete reconstruction of the Inglewood Main Library, with construction already underway and the new facility expected to open its doors to the community by July 2027.

The Inglewood Finance Department requested the Inglewood Joint Powers Authority adopt a resolution to issue the Lease Revenue Bonds, marking a significant investment in community infrastructure and public resources. The hearing took place at 2:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Construction on the new library began in October 2025, launching an ambitious 21-month timeline to deliver a modern facility that will serve Inglewood residents with expanded resources, updated technology, and improved community spaces.

The Main Library serves as a critical resource for Inglewood families, students, job seekers, and lifelong learners. A modernized facility will provide enhanced access to books, digital resources, computer labs, study spaces, and community programming essential for educational and economic advancement.

For students in the Inglewood Unified School District, where 67 percent of children come from economically disadvantaged households, the library offers free access to educational materials, homework help, and internet connectivity that many families cannot afford at home. The new facility will expand these vital services.

Libraries nationwide have evolved into community hubs offering far more than books, providing job training resources, technology literacy programs, meeting spaces for community organizations, and safe gathering places for residents of all ages. Inglewood’s new library is expected to embrace this expanded community role.

The $60 million investment represents the city’s commitment to public education and community development at a time when library systems across California face budget pressures. Inglewood officials say the project demonstrates that public infrastructure remains a priority even amid competing fiscal demands.

Residents can expect regular updates on construction progress over the next 21 months as the new Main Library takes shape. Once completed in July 2027, the facility will serve generations of Inglewood families with modern resources and expanded programming.
