Inglewood Main Library Renovation Continues with 2028 Reopening Target as $61M Transformation Progresses
Inglewood’s Main Library remains closed for extensive renovations as the $61 million transformation project continues, with the anticipated reopening now set for 2028, city officials confirmed.
During the multi-year construction period, all library services remain fully available at the Crenshaw Imperial Branch Library, located at 11141 Crenshaw Blvd., which now serves as the main hub for Inglewood’s public library system. A Custom Library Van also provides mobile services throughout the community.
The ambitious renovation project aims to transform the Main Library into a modern, dynamic space designed to better serve the community’s evolving needs while preserving the building’s distinctive architectural features. The facility will be reimagined as the Inglewood Main Library and Innovation Center.
“This renovation represents a significant investment in our community’s future,” said city officials in announcing the project timeline. “The upgraded facility will provide state-of-the-art resources for education, technology access, and community programming.”
The city has secured multiple funding sources to support the transformation. In August 2024, Inglewood was awarded a $2.7 million Building Forward Grant from the California State Library specifically to cover the seismic retrofit portion of the renovation, ensuring the historic structure meets modern safety standards.
Additional funding came through a development agreement with Murphy’s Bowl, LLC, which allocated $6 million from a community benefit fund toward the library renovation. The comprehensive funding package demonstrates the city’s commitment to maintaining robust public library services.
The Crenshaw-Imperial Branch has expanded its operations to accommodate the temporary consolidation of services. The branch provides comprehensive reference services, readers’ advisory, and programming for adults, teens, and children. All services that were previously available at the Main Library can be accessed at this location.
The Custom Library Van extends the library’s reach by bringing services directly to neighborhoods throughout Inglewood, ensuring that residents in all parts of the city maintain access to library resources during the renovation period.
Library cardholders can continue to check out books, access digital resources, attend programs, and receive assistance with research and technology at the Crenshaw Imperial Branch. The facility maintains regular operating hours and offers the same quality of service residents have come to expect.
The renovation comes at a time when libraries nationwide are reimagining their role as community hubs that extend beyond traditional book lending. Modern library spaces increasingly incorporate technology labs, meeting rooms, maker spaces, and areas designed for collaborative learning and community engagement.
City officials have emphasized that despite the temporary closure of the Main Library building, the commitment to providing excellent library services remains unchanged. Staff continue to offer programming, technology access, and educational support throughout the renovation period.
Residents can contact the Crenshaw Imperial Branch Library for information about services, programs, and resources. The library system continues to serve as a vital community resource for education, research, and lifelong learning in Inglewood.
