An Inglewood resident’s home security camera captured footage of a man stealing mail directly from their mailbox early Saturday morning, raising concerns about mail security in the community.

The incident, which occurred just before 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, shows an unidentified man approaching the resident’s mailbox, removing multiple items including envelopes and grocery store coupons, before quickly leaving the property. The homeowner, who requested anonymity, shared the Ring camera footage with local media.

Mail theft has been an ongoing concern in Inglewood and surrounding communities, with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service reporting an increase in such incidents across South Los Angeles neighborhoods in recent months.

Inglewood Police Department officials recommend several precautions for residents to protect themselves from mail theft:

“Collecting your mail promptly after delivery, using secure mailboxes with locks, or considering a post office box for sensitive mail can significantly reduce the risk of theft,” said Officer James Rodriguez of the Inglewood Police Department’s Community Affairs Division.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service advises residents to report suspected mail theft immediately by calling 877-876-2455 or reporting online at postalinspectors.uspis.gov. Local incidents should also be reported to the Inglewood Police Department.

Authorities note that stealing mail is a federal offense punishable by up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.

Residents who believe they may have been victims of mail theft are encouraged to monitor their financial accounts for any suspicious activity, as stolen mail is often targeted for identity theft purposes.

The Inglewood Neighborhood Watch program will be hosting a community safety workshop next month at Rogers Park Community Center, where postal inspectors will provide information on preventing mail theft and protecting personal information.
